Japanese businessman Yusaku Maezawa hand delivers an Uber Eats order to the crew of the International Space Station.
On December 11th, the food delivery subsidiary of Uber, Uber Eats made the longest food delivery into the ISS. The company partnered up with Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa to deliver the meal to the astronauts stationed on the Space Station. By completing this order, the food delivery company had set various records for delivering the meal. For this delivery, Yusaku Maezawa, a self-proclaimed ‘Delivery superfan’, traveled for almost eight and a half hours in a 12-day trajectory path around the globe. Maezawa traveled for approximately 248 miles in space. He approached the International Space Station at 9:40 am on December 11th.
After reaching the delivery address, crew commander Anton Shkaplerov welcomed Maezawa by saying “Thank you for coming to space.” Later completing the journey, Maezawa stated that he was just there to deliver some delicious food and much appreciated the space crew for allowing him to handle the space food delivery. The meal order consists of a Japanese beef bowl, braised pork, miso simmered mackerel, chicken, and bamboo shoots. The crew had ordered a canned Japanese space food, which can be able to consume directly from the package. To make this delivery more memorable, Maezawa was dressed as a regular uber eats delivery person.
Uber CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi stated sarcastically that, “one small handoff for Maezawa, one giant delivery for Uber Eats,” mocking the iconic line from the first moon landing. He further stated that, over time, humankind had made several deliveries into the space, and to raise among those famous deliveries the company try to take a little effort. The company aims to help people to reach anywhere and they are proud to serve the crew of the International Space Station. He also said that, although the delivery person had taken too much time to make a delivery, the company is giving a benefit of the doubt to Yusaku Maezawa for making the delivery for such a long distance.
