As medical professionals struggle to treat waves of RSV patients, many of whom are children and need hospitalisation, the U.S. flu season keeps growing worse.
While there may be cause for optimism that RSV cases are levelling off in some areas of the country, the same cannot be said for the flu. This was stated by the CDC on Monday.
Health officials said on Friday that diseases resembling the flu were the cause of 7.5% of last week's outpatient appointments. That is higher than any season since and equal to the height of the 2017–18 flu season.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky stated at a media event that "it turns out that the cold weather the gathering indoors, all of things is favourable for respiratory viruses and terrible for symptoms." "But what I would say is, you know, there are other infections out there; we want to make sure that we are on top of the ones that people can take preventative measures against, such as flu and COVID, for sure, through vaccination. then, for both COVID and influenza, antiviral intervention."
Normally, the winter flu season doesn't start until December or January, but this year it started early and has been made more difficult by the concurrent spread of other diseases.
Not lab-confirmed diagnoses, but rather reports of symptoms like coughs and sore throats, are used to gauge how busy doctors' offices are. Therefore, various respiratory diseases might be included.
According to the CDC, at least 8.7 million illnesses, 78,000 hospitalizations, and 4,500 flu-related deaths—including 14 paediatric deaths—have occurred this year.
In addition, Dr. Walensky discussed COVID-19, which has not yet had an exceptionally high infection rate but is beginning to rise.
Following the Thanksgiving break, Walensky stated that "we have started to observe the regrettable and predictable spike of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations nationwide." As winter approaches and more people congregate indoors with less ventilation, the increase in incidence and hospitalizations is particularly concerning.
