According to a recent report from the American Association for Cancer Research, more Americans are beating cancer than ever before.
More than a million more people in the US have received a cancer diagnosis in the previous three years, which is considered to be cancer survivors. According to the group, there are 18 million survivors in the US as of January, and 26 million are anticipated by 2040. According to the research, there were only 3 million cancer survivors in the US in 1971.
The past few years for which data is available are 2011–2017, and between those years the five-year overall rate of survival for all malignancies increased from 49% in the middle of the 1970s to almost 70%.
According to the organization, decreases between 1991 and 2019 resulted in the averting of roughly 3.5 million deaths from cancer worldwide, regardless of age.
Reductions in smoking and advancements in early diagnosis and treatment of cancer are driving the trend, based on the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2022, that was released on Wednesday.
Dr. Lisa Coussens, the association's president, said in a statement that financing for a research on the illness and its therapies had contributed to the association's success.
Targeted treatments, immunotherapy, and other innovative therapeutic modalities now being used in clinical settings are all products of fundamental advances in basic research, according to the speaker. "To fuel the next wave of discoveries and expedite progress, investment in cancer science and support for scientific education at all levels are critically necessary."
For instance, Coussens said during a news conference on Wednesday that the US Food and Drug Administration authorized two diagnostic imaging products, expanded the number of 10 previously approved drug treatments for additional cancer types, and approved eight anticancer treatments between August 1 and July 31.
