Scientists have discovered innovative medical treatments that cure conditions without injections.
Chronic conditions are diseases that last for more than a year and require special treatments and continuous treatments, and to treat such conditions, lifelong injections and treatments are required, which as a patient can be tiresome. There are a lot of complications a patient faces while going through the treatment, for example, Trypanophobia (fear of needles), infections that may occur because of it, or sometimes missing doses. This draws attention to the need of innovative methods that have lesser side effects and are more effective so that the patients can be treated more generously.
Baylor College of Medicine has collaborated with other such institutions to come up with a more effective way of delivering medications without making the use of injections, but with the intake of pills. This research has been recently issued by The National Academy of Sciences.
Dr Christine Beeton, professor of integrative physiology at Baylor says, People often dont like injecting themselves with needles as a part of their treatment. Recently we have been exploring the alternate dimension in which we can use the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus reuteri by using the novel oral drug delivery system.
Professor Beeton in collaboration with Dr Robert A. Britton, who is the professor of molecular virology and microbiology (Section of science that conducts research of microorganisms.), also a member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Centre at Baylor college of Medicine. The Britton Lab is currently under the crucial task of developing the needful tools to genetically modify living microorganisms.
They have chosen the name L. reuteri, as this bacteria occurs in a particular place, naturally. This bacteria does not remain permanently in the guts as the bacteria attaches itself to the inner surface layer and the inner surface layer of the gut is renewed habitually.
The outcome is uplifting says Beeton.
