Study shows that cholesterol lowering drug satin reduces risk of stroke.
A new Danish study published a report in the medical journal Neurology claim that a prescriptive drug named satin which is used to manage the cholesterol level helps in reducing risk of stroke. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said stroke is the main reason of death and inability in U.S. Through proper and healthy lifestyle like eating healthy food, exercising and quitting smoking, it can be controlled.
In another study, researchers tried to find out whether long term application of satin helps in reducing the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), which is the most common type of stroke. Intracerebral hemorrhage results in bleeding between the brain tissue and the skull or within the brain tissue itself, called the ischemic stroke, which can cause brain damage and be life threatening. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs in the brain tissue and is 15-20% of strokes.
Satins are powerful drugs used for the treatment of high cholesterol level in patients. They perform their work by reducing the fatty deposits in the arteries and preventing blood from bleeding inside the brain. Researches claim that satins did reduce the risk of strokes to some extent and it was more helpful for people who used it for a longer period of time. Long term use of satin reduces cholesterol, and thereafter reduces cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease and ultimate reducing ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke risk.
Though satin helps reduces risk of stroke, though it comes with little bit of risks with it. Complaints of nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal problems are commonly seen. The risk of strokes is aggravated in case of behavior like smoking or alcohol. A trial by the US National Institute of Health plans to determine whether hospitalized people with hemorrhagic strokes and people on satins should continue taking the drug or stop it any further. However, some research highlights that people with history of ischemic strokes (clotting of blood) have higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke, if satin is consumed.
