In January 2018, the excise rate on imported cigarettes was increased threefold from AZN4 to AZN12 per 1,000 units. This led to a price rise of cigarettes and current value growth. A tax increase on cigarettes produced in the country from ASN4 to AZN12 per 1,000 sticks was then introduced in July 2018, resulting in further price increases. In January 2019, the excise rate was further increased to AZN28 per 1,000 units for imported cigarettes and to AZN20 per 1,000 units for domestic cigarettes.
